Theatre Collaborative Project

k’s Collaborative Project was a creative partnership where k and her teammate selected a specific song and developed a play inspired by the political and social issues of the time.

Chosen Inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4RjJKxsamQ

Theme & Message:

Our play is intended to convey a similar message to the song chosen; however, we will be doing so through a different topic: the global issue in Indonesia that occurred in August of 2025 regarding Indonesia’s DPR RI (House of Representatives). We intend to convey the struggles that the civilians have gone through to fight for their rights and protest against the wrongful doings of the elitist, additionally commemorating the lives that have been lost during these protests.

This topic is essential to talk about because as Indonesians we intend to fight for our control through different formats. This play will allow awareness to be brought and shed light on the issue that has been going on for years. Additionally, it is a heavy-hearted story that would be able to capture the hearts of our intended audience as they begin to realize the reality we live in.

Skills and techniques intended to be used are tension, and the use of body language that will allow us to convey the emotional appeal to the audience. These two skills and techniques are an essential asset as they will be able to depict the real issue, as if they were sitting front row during the “downfall of Indonesia”.

Origin of The Song:

“Wind of Change” was written by Scorpions’ singer Klaus Meine after the band’s 1989 trip to Moscow for the Music Peace Festival. Inspired by the hopeful atmosphere, Soviet reforms under Gorbachev, and the same sense that the Cold War was ending, Meine had penned this song as a reflection of unity and change. It had been released in 1990, as it became an anthem for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the shifting world order.

The lyrics are able to capture a sense of a world on the brink of change, referencing Moscow landmarks to symbolize East-West reconciliation; it’s about leaving behind division and embracing unity, freedom, and a shared future.

The tone is optimistic, reflective, and emotional. As it blends nostalgia for a divided past with excitement for a hopeful tomorrow. The song became an anthem for peace, symbolizing the fall of barriers—both physical and ideological.

DESIGN:

Stage Style: Found Space

We do the performance in the storage room, we are two university students. Our university had gotten raided by the police, they held guns to our heads and forced us out. Some of us managed to hide, some made it out, but some were shot.

This performance will take place in the black box theatre in the storage room. Sections will be blocked off with black cloth to create a tight space where no light will be able to shine in, making an almost “claustrophobic” space.

The audience will be situated near the door; asking them to make a pathway before the show starts to allow the actor to run in, in the opening scene.

Sketch

The pathway in between the audience will be used in the opening as an actor will come running into the “storage room” escaping from the chaos outside.

Materials & Quantaties

3x Black cloth/fabric/curtain - To create the “stage”

2x Fabric - to cover the windows, preventing the light from coming in.

1x Fog machine - creating the effect of the tear gas smoke

2x Backpacks - for the actors

1x Projector - video mapping, to create a more immersive experience for the audience. Allowing us to create a better projection of our message.

1x Lighting machine - Allowing us to create different colored light based on emotion or any scene/situation that would like to be depicted.

SCRIPT

CHARACTERS

C1: In this play, she is injured. She had been indirectly hit by one of the rubber bullets that had been shot into the university. C1 is the younger sister of C2’s friend. She is a high schooler.

C2: She is a university student who enrolls in the university that is currently being raided by the police. She is a medical student, hence her knowledge of how to take care of C1 and her injuries.

SCRIPT & STAGE DIRECTIONS

The play opens with protest noises. Actors come out from the back curtain [wearing black shirts, ski masks, and holding signs; playing as protesters].

Both: “Tuntutan Rakyat!” chanting erupts

They wave the signs up and down as they begin to make their way off the stage and out of the room. They quickly change outside.

The scene opens with a video projection, a shadow figure projected onto the stage showing a female running for her life, then she is shot. The screen turns red (along with the light) and the projection fades away.

The scene opens with background noises, shouting, shots, smoke, and flashing lights.

After the video ends and the room turns red, C1 goes into the room limping and falls over. C1 finds her, helps her up and they go in the closet to hide.

C2: “Oh my god. Are you okay?!”

*C2 helps her and they rush into the closet to hide from the chaos outside*

C2: Panting *As they enter the stage, C2 looks distressed. She looks around to make sure no one spots them.*

AUDIENCE IS ASKED TO STAND BEFORE ACTORS ENTER, AFTER ACTORS ARE ON STAGE AUDIENCE ARE ALLOWED TO SIT.

*C2 places C1 on the ground with her bag, they are in the janitors closet*

C2: “lay on your bag, get comfortable. I think we’re going to be in here for a while.” Trying to find a light switch, trying to switch it on and gets frustrated when nothing happens “They shut the power off. I guess we’re sitting in darkness.”

C1: “Oh, I saw some candles on the shelf over there. Maybe we can light those.

C2 goes over and grabs the candles. Goes to sit with C1 and lights the candles. After the second candle is switched on, C1 says her lines.

C1: “Thank you. For saving me out there.” *Portraying a sense of worry on her face as she looks at her leg* “Who knew what would’ve happened to me.”

C2: *As C1 is talking, she paces around looking for some sort of cloth to wrap C1’s leg.* “I’m glad you're okay. Here place this on your leg, It’ll hopefully prevent you from bleeding too much.” Sighs “So tell me, how’d you end up here?”

C1: “I came here to visit my sister. She enrolls in this university. Her name is Mikaela.” pauses “And well....I don’t really know how this happened. I heard shots and I just ran. I kept running, until I felt a sharp pain and collapsed onto the ground.”

C2: “Oh, Mikaela Pridani? I know her. She’s in one of my lecture classes.” *C2 notices the worried face C1 makes.* “You know she’s okay right? You don’t have to worry about her.”

*A loud bang fills the silence in the room. Smoke enters the air.*

C1 and C2 both flinch, covering their heads and ears.

C2: “How did this even happen? I can’t believe we have gotten to this point.”

C1: “I have no more hope for our country. This has been going on for weeks. We’re burning ourselves to the ground.” frustration sets into both characters as they sit in silence, background noises play (shouting, etc).

C2: Checks on her leg “You're bleeding through the cloth. Here hold on.” C2 scrambles to find another cloth to tighten the wound. C2 Grabs an emergency kit from her bag to clean up the wound.

C1: Small chuckle “Where did that come from?”

C2: A giggle back “I’m a medic student, I had this for my test that was supposed to happen today.”

C1: “Well, at least you have a patient to practice on now”

They let out a short giggle at the conversation.

C2: “This is gonna hurt a little. I need to pull out the bullet to make sure you don’t get infected. Then I’m going to alcohol swab your wound and stitch it with temporary bandage stitches okay?”

C1: “Okay...Please be gentle.”

C2 begins the procedure on C1’s leg. C1 winches in pain and looks away. After C2 wraps cloth around her leg the procedure is done.

C2: “I’m really sorry.”

C1: In pain “It’s okay. It was for the best anyways. Thank you for doing this.”

C2: “It’s really no worries. We should help one another at times like this.”

C1: “I hope these times don’t last too long.”

C2: “Me either. We don’t know what’s happening out there.” C2 checks her phone to find any sort of news that could let them know what’s going on outside. “No signal” Frustrated

They sit there in silence for a while, leaning against the wall. Facing the audience, but their eyes are wandering around the room. Background noises continue to play.

C1: “God. It’s so loud out there. I hope everyone's okay.”

C2: “Yeah me too.” takes a breath, faces C1 “Hey, I never caught your name.”

C1: “I didn’t catch yours either. I guess we were too caught up in the fire.” let out a small laugh. “My names Maia”

C2: “Nice meeting you. My names Nura.”

C1: “Nice meeting you too. Well...I would’ve preferred if it wasn’t under these "unforeseen" circumstances.”

The background noise begins to fade, the flashing light stops. Very distant sounds of shouting and occasional bangs.

C1: she hesitates, her voice projects softly “Do you...Do you think my sister’s still out there?”

C2: she meets her eyes, with a soft gaze “She’s strong. Stronger than either of us right now. I know she’ll keep fighting. She’s going to be okay.”

C1: “But what if... she doesn’t make it back? Like the rest of them?”

C2: “Then we carry her voice. We carry the fight it took to gain the right for our country.” gaze shifts to the audience. “That’s how they live on.”

*sound effects of chanting for justice increase.*

Lights fade off. Video mapping plays. The video shows an outsider perspective of what is happening. The fighting spirit that lives, commemorates lives that have been lost.

*video mapping finishes and fades out. Actors come back to the front.*
